Cerebral Palsy in Adults: Does Cerebral Palsy Get Worse with Age?
I was in a relationship from the middle of my first year of high school to the middle of what should have been my senior year, but was actually my first year of college I graduated high school a year early. Because of health issues throughout high school, I went to a home-bound like school, while my boyfriend at the time went to a regular public school. I tried to join him and my other classmates in 10th grade, but that idea lasted less than a semester because managing my health and keeping up with the demands of education in such a big school seemed next to impossible.
But the Universe blessed us both with the same fabulous physical therapist. After our physical therapist knew me a few months, I guess he thought I was special enough to meet the young man who he had been working with since he was 3. I have always said health care providers become your first set of best friends and lead you to your other set, because I have been around them more in my 21 years than regular friends.

How can I help? What do I need to know about dating a partner with a disability? My first piece of advice is to remember that everyone goes through the awkward stages of a new relationship and getting to know someone, regardless of disabilities. I clearly have a physical disability, but I used to think that it was best just to ignore that obvious fact unless my partner or potential partner wanted to talk about it. But that makes the situation awkward for both sides of the relationship.
The person with disabilities feels on guard, just waiting for the hammer to drop. Remember, they like you and have an interest in you, regardless of your disability. So, talk about it.
Come to an event! It took me a long time to admit to myself that I had CP, and then accept my body for all it is. I was one of those people who rushed it in the beginning, and that did not end in my favor. I have been lucky and I am incredibly grateful; every guy I have dated has been so gracious when I told him about cerebral palsy, and what it means for how my body functions. They all have said that CP is really a non-issue for them. Again, gaining confidence in yourself is incredibly important here!
Cerebral palsy (CP for short) is a disorder of the brain. Normally, the brain tells the rest of the body exactly what to do and when to do it. Because of how CP affects the brain, a person might not be able to walk, talk, eat, or move the way most people do.
Recreation Thanks to technology, social services and other support, people who have cerebral palsy CP have better chances than ever to lead independent, fulfilling lives. From a Velcro grip for holding a fork to computers controlled by eye movement, special equipment can help people with CP in every area of daily life. This is called assistive technology, and you want to remember that term. Social service groups that assist people with disabilities use it all the time.
If You Need Help Buying Equipment Federal law requires each state to have a program that helps people find the equipment they need. None of these gadgets are free. Bellows Fund offers grants to help people buy or maintain equipment. After you find a home, you might be able to make it more livable than it already is. For instance, you can have an assistance animal, such as a guide dog, even if your apartment building has a no-pets policy.
Or, if your complex has no assigned parking spaces, you still could get one close to your unit if you have trouble getting around. Federal law also lets you modify your residence in reasonable ways, such as by putting grab bars in a bathroom, but your landlord is not required to pay for these changes. And federal law forbids landlords to discriminate against the disabled by turning down applications or trying to tack on special fees.
If you have CP, assistive gadgets in your home let you be more independent than you could have been just a few years ago.

I thought so, at least. Then that writing professor offered her perspective:

My ideal partner would be easy to talk to and really listens to what I am saying, is kind, careing, gentle, loving, romantic, fun to be with and makes me laugh. Spastic Quadriplegia Cerebral palsy is the name for a condition in which brain damage has disrupted normal muscle functioning. For accuracy of diagnosis and treatment, researchers have divided the condition into nine different forms; some individuals with CP have something referred to as mixed cerebral palsy. I do most of my banking online, and since my cerebral palsy makes it difficult for me to get around independently, Amazon and eBay are my virtual shopping malls, too. In those early days when 56 Kbps dial-up connections were the norm, I had mixed feelings about the World Wide Web. I also dreaded computer viruses; when some of my friends tried to convince me to sign up with America Online AOL in , I declined.
I was afraid that my custom-built PC would be infected by the Michelangelo Virus or something like it. As the years went by, however, I realized that my resistance to the Internet was doing me more harm than good. Many of my friends and communications consulting clients were connected to the Web and used instant messaging and email on a regular basis. Many stores, banks, and other enterprises were also beginning to do business online via websites as well.
Some people were even dating online, either by joining such online dating sites as Match. It began in the late summer of when one of my neighbors sold me a custom-built Pentium PC with an external modem. Juno is now a subsidiary of United Online, which also owns Classmates. But back in it was one of the first companies to offer free email service through its proprietary software. I have since seen several of my letters to the Miami Herald in the Op-Ed page of that Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper, but that letter to Time magazine was my first step onto the larger world of online writing.
